Wildeberg and Kompanjie Wines. South Africa.

*As seen in The Logbook

South African wine is immediately recognizable to the palate and embodies the boldest spirit of the country. It was this unique expression of the South African terroir that inspired the creation of Wildeberg and Kompanjie in 2009.

The wine industry in South Africa has seen a boom in international and national popularity, not only within the food and beverage circles, but amongst people looking for the finer tastes in life who have taken to enjoying the crisp and clear flavours available. It is no surprise that some of the finest wines are produced in the most dramatic of settings, as if the taste could be influenced by the sublime scenery that the vineyards find themselves in.

WILDEBERG

The huge rocky mountains surrounding Franschhoek provide the most dramatic and beautiful backdrop for Wildeberg. With just 10 hectares of the farm dedicated to vines, the rest of the estate is left wild. This is thanks to a philosophy of working in harmony with nature which is taken very seriously here and creates a better working environment.

The tiny yet perfectly formed wine making team, led by winemaker JD Rossouw, are responsible for hand picking the best grapes. With meticulous care JD and his team are fully involved in the process, putting as much of their passion and experience into each and every bottle, creating tastes that are dazzlingly textural and deeply layered.

THE WINES

Wildeberg White

Offering a great textural mouthfeel and benefitting from a long and frankly incredible palate of bright citrus and white stone fruit flavours, Wildeberg White 2018, Franschhoek – SA or commonly known as Wildeberg White is made entirely from incredibly old vine Semillon. The word ancient actually describes these vines better and a touch of new and old oak has worked wonders on bringing out everything this wine has to offer.

Wildeberg ‘Terroirs’ Chenin Blanc 2018, Paarl – SA

The grapes that are sourced to make this outstanding white come from old bush vines situated in the deep sandy loams of Paarl Mountain. Described as having blood orange and orange blossom flavours combined with a mineral twang. This white is considered to be great with seafood and chicken dishes to offer a palate cleansing wash.

Wildeberg ‘Terroirs’ Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Stellenbosch – SA

Great with Thai food or as an apéritif, the Wildeberg ‘Terroirs’ Sauvignon Blanc 2018 hails from a parcel of old vines situated on the steep austere slopes of Simonsberg in Stellenbosch. These grapes are picked by hand, crushed, fermented and processed at Wildeberg and allowed to transform into a rich and silky wine with brilliant acidity.

AWARDS

While the quality of the wine speaks for themselves, it is worthwhile to mention that on the Tim Atkin ratings The Wildeberg White got 95 points and the Wildeberg terroirs Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc got 92 points.
