*As seen in The Logbook
Possessing a unique vibe unseen elsewhere in the world let alone the rest of Costa Rica, Puerto Viejo is a city that is proud of its multiculturality and its flavour. With over fifty different nationalities calling it home it’s a city alive with vigour.
Quiet and peaceful during the day, at night it erupts with live music, reggae, dancing and partying in the streets and on the sands. While the smells of a globe worth of different cuisines and flavours of drink envelop the city in a cloud and drift down the streets in a flood.
Puerto Viejo is also famous for its stunning beaches, where the Caribbean ocean and the jungle meet and some of the finest surfing in the world can be found. This is the paradise where Selina Puerto Viejo was founded in February 2017.
The founders of Selina Puerto Viejo have managed to create a place that can forge authentic, meaningful experiences between staff, guests and locals. This is the spirit of Selina, which owns many sites, and is focused on the current generation, encouraging creativity and free thinking and a sense of community and giving.
For example, guests are invited to participate in beach cleaning days and other activities that contribute something to the place and to local residents. In the Selina family, the ideology of sharing and giving aims to unite and solidify a new generation of travellers who can hold these ideals to heart. And, through this do their part in creating a new and exciting world to explore.
As part of this approach, Selina believes in employs locally and Selina Puerto Viejo has twenty nine incredible staff members and all of them are Ticos (native Costarrican), while 85% of them are also locals who were born in the Puerto Viejo area
Two main categories of accommodation are available at Puerto Viejo.
Private, which includes thirteen Micros with a shared bath, thirteen Uniques, which are tepee tents, eight Standards, five Deluxes, three Suites, one Studio Apartment and four Apartments. And Community, which includes three dorms which sleep between six and sixteen people and are perfect for large group trips.
All of them enjoy a Caribbean style of decoration and most have been built with big balconies and windows to let the breeze and sunshine in. WIFI, USB adapters and power points are readily available for charging devices and updating socials.
ECO CONSCIOUS CONSTRUCTION
Many local materials were used in the construction of the buildings, including wood and native stone. All the exterior parts of the teepees use local dry leaves called Suita, which is a little palm tree.
But the most important thing here is the meaning behind the structure, Tepees are inspired by the traditional houses of the Bribris Indians, who have lived in the area for hundreds of years. It is said that the Tepee was conceived under a cosmovision and is a place to rest where all knowledge and spiritual energy work together in perfect harmony, connecting the mind and the world. Locally, they are known as Casa Cósmica.
With such a vibrant community there is no shortage of activities to enjoy at Selina Puerto Viejo. From bonding with your fellow residents to integrating with locals, enjoying the delicious Afro-Caribbean food and listening to the local music.
For the more activity-eager traveller, they are spoilt for choice here as this region was made for the outgoing, outdoorsy type. There is kayaking, snorkelling, paddle boarding, reggae nights and the very, very best surfing.
In fact, this destination is known in the surfing community for the biggest and most powerful wave in Costa Rica, known as Salsa Brava. Newbies to surfing should not let this frighten you though, there are also a number of beautiful beaches such as Playa Chiquita, Playa Negra, and Punta Uva for surfing to be practiced.
