Peaceful, solitary and a perfect escape from our ever increasingly busy lifestyles, we need more places like Portugal Nature Lodge. Founded in 2009 by Peter a bicycle mechanic and Joke an IT project manager the purpose behind the lodge was to offer these exact three things to others, following how they escaped and discovered them themselves.
Accommodation
There are four accommodations on site. One South African style safari tent, one family sized lodge tent and two Mongolian yurts. All of the tents have their unique atmosphere but what makes Portugal Nature Lodge particularly unique is the private space and the fantastic view all the tents enjoy.
Privacy is important so each tent is equipped with everything a guest needs, including private bathrooms with fantastic hot showers, washbasin and a flush toilet.
The Story
Peter and Joke gave up their life in Holland in 2006 to start a long cycling trip and ended up in Portugal in 2008 and decided they did not want to leave. After a few months of searching they found a piece of land that they loved and was within their budget. Then the work to turn their dream into a reality began.
Joke explains that there was a lot of work to be done. The land had to be cleaned of weeds and shrubs and there was no house, only a ruin of a building. No electricity or running water but the potential for the land was amazing.
“We wanted to make a camping experience for people who wanted more comfort than could be found while sleeping on an air mattress and having to share the bathroom with the other guests,” she says, “So we went for the glamping option, providing comfortable sleeping in a tent with the comfort of a good bed, a nice place to sit, your own bathroom and kitchen and privacy. We find that people can enjoy themselves better when they’ve slept well.”
Customer Service
Portugal Nature Lodge is a summer location, so everything is taken down each winter and erected again for the following season which starts on the 30th March and ends October 20th. It takes roughly a month to get the land ready and the tents up but guarantees a freshness to the site which is part of its allure.
This sort of attentiveness to the customer is very important to Peter and Joke who make a point of building up a relationship with each of their guests prior to their arrival. This helps them understand what the guest is looking for and how best they can make their stay even more special.
